Description

To help you see the perceptual effects, the original stretched data is on the left, and the modified palette is shown on the right. Same image in both cases.

The red dominated image appears to have a hole near the pillar on the right. And the dark clouds also look like holes on the left. By manipulating our sensation of illumination we can enhance what we wish to present as a more 3-D structure of a pillar and floating dark clouds above.

For some reason it is easier to believe that deep red will be fading to nothingness, but light illuminated coloration will seem to present a back-illumination of an object.

The red image looks like a dying region, fading into oblivion. The bright image looks like an active pillar of creation, a sense that something new will be emerging.

The palette modification was performed by making a red color mask of chrominance in the image on the left, then using that mask to become the blue and green channels of another image that was added to the original image. Excess green noise was then removed with a green chrominance filter. All in PixInsight.
